Newsletter November/December 2023 - Message From Philippa Harris, General Manager
What a wonderful year we’ve had so far: A Beatles music concert, Mahler’s 'Das Lied von der Erde' with soloists Wendy Dawn Thompson and Simon O’Neill, 'Celebrating Matariki' with a special commission from Dame Gillian Whitehead, and 'Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto' featuring our own Principal Trumpeter Ralph Miller.
Our most recent concert was Dvorak’s New World attended by a large audience and who clearly enjoyed Dvorak’s ever-popular symphony plus the world première of Anthony Ritchie’s Symphony No. 6. Of this concert an audience member commented: “What a wonderful performance of the brand new Anthony Ritchie Symphony No. 6, and the joyous Dvorak New World Symphony, which I love so much. These performances were the finest I've heard from the DSO. Well done all of you!”
We’ve also enjoyed extensive collaborations with the University of Otago on many projects: performance students as soloists in our Beatles concert, and six aspiring student composers whose works were workshopped in our Composers’ Workshop, as well as our joint instrumental tuition work.
All these demonstrate just how important each and every supporter of the DSO is in whatever form that support takes: audience member, sponsor, funder, donor, player, conductor, soloist, composer, volunteer, contractor. To you all – thank you.
And so to our last 2023 projects:
Our Schools Tour
The Messiah with City Choir Dunedin on 25 November with outstanding soloists
Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto on 2 December, sponsored by phwealth.
We are especially looking forward to working again with inspirational conductor Umberto Clerici in our December concert. As a former cello soloist, he brings added insight and energy to the orchestra’s interpretations. Konstantin Shamray, a leading Australian pianist, performs with all Australia’s major orchestras and we’re especially excited to be performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto with him on his DSO dèbut – DSO last performed this concerto in 1990!
We look forward to seeing you at our concert!
