Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale) - 3 masked players: Flute, cello, piano

We open with graceful interplay of a rarely heard Mozartian masterpiece performed by principal harpist of the NZSO Carolyn Mills, with strings and winds. Debussy’s enchanting Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp captures impressionist hues and textures and brief but striking works by Auric and Honegger lead to the finale: George Crumb’s Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale), a hauntingly beautiful composition for three masked players on flute, cello, and piano, using pioneeringly innovative techniques and performed under blue light.
